514 (i) SODIUM SULPHATE
E 514 (ii) SODIUM ACID SULPHATE
Sodium sulfate is obtained from salt and sulfuric acid.
It has several functions: stabilizer, filling agent, acidity regulator and synthetic processing aid.
It can be contained in various products, such as chewing gum and colorants.
At the moment there are contrasting theories about the effects this additive can have on humans: some researchers think it can have harmful side effects on kidneys and heart, and also cause digestive disorders; others, instead, consider it harmless for human health. Not recommended especially for pregnant or nursing women, infants and children.
Therefore, since there is no certainty about the effects that sodium sulfate may have on health, it is not recommended to consume high doses.
